Smash Welcomes Jimmy Grillo

October 4, 2018

Smash Music's faculty roster is expanding by the minute!  We welcome Jimmy Grillo to the Smash Music Family!

Smash founder Scott M. Graves recently is at down in store with  Jimmy for this blog.

SMG: So Jimmy, let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. (Jimmy laughs in background).

I understand you recently transitioned into a full time focus on music and education as your career?

JG: I did.  It was where my talents have lead me in life.  I'm proud of that.  I am passionate about teaching and making my art.  I want to share my expertise with those around me.

SMG: That's great energy  and right where Smash Music wishes its' faculty to be heading.  What about music and music making really gets you energized?  Who do listen to and how does that effect your performance?

JG: I listen to a wide accumulation of styles.  Nothing is off limits.  It all effects your playing subliminally.  It requires a lot of imagination and creativity and I love a challenge to my intellectual side.  Bach, Charlie Parker, (he bOp! riffs for SMG rigorously), metal guitar playing, I love Chuck Schuldiner; Obscura is a band I've recently been turned onto and I can't get enough of that.

SMG: Love it!  Now what instruments are you teaching for Smash Music

JG: Piano and Guitar, my favorites?

SMG: And where did you go to school?

JG: Lake Forest in Illinois and finished my undergrad at UNH.  I majored in piano performance and studied Jazz Guitar for three years formally at Lake Forest.  I've got extensive performance experience on both instruments.

SMG: What do you want Jimmy Grillo students to know about working with you?

JG: They can always come to me with questions,  no matter the challenges we will find a systematic way to help them achieve their unique and distinct musical goals.  I want them to love their artistic and musical self.  (Again, riffs vigorously on the hollow-body guitar).  I want them to find themselves as performers and artists, no matter how crazy at first they might think they sound.

SMG: I love the energy and your desire to work with them.  Let's set the world on fire!
